Combinations like 45 and 67 occur much more frequently than 29 and 37. The 17th most common 10-digit password is (for those of you who are not math nerds, those are the first digits.
There are plenty of reasons that you might have to crack a combination safe. Perhaps you lost the keys or you are facing a torrential downpour of zombies outside. Either way, these things are much easier to pick than you may think. Now, the important thing here is that this applies mostly to lower security safes.

How it works:

Despite having 60 different numbers, Dudley locks actually really only have 10 different possible positions. Each position is 4 numbers long, with a 2 number buffer between them.

To find these 10 different positions, simply pull on the shackle and turn the dial. You will find that it catches on a certain number, twist it the other way and it will catch on another number, about 4 numbers away from the first one. This 4 number area is one of the 10 positions, or 'zones'.

Look at the example to the right, you can see that the green areas are the 10 different positions, and the blue areas are the 2 numbers that separate each position. So now that there are only 10 different positions, instead of 60, we know that there are 1000 (10 x 10 x 10) different 3 number combinations. At this point, you could just spend some time trying all 1000 combinations, it is a manageable number, but we can cut it down even more.

The first step to cutting down the number of combinations is to remove the 3rd number. It isn't necessary, because on the third turn you can just spin the dial through each zone while pulling up on the shackle. So, after removing the third number, we are down to 100 (10 x 10) possible combinations!

Now, on most (not all) Dudley locks, the second number is lower than the first number. Using that handy bit of information, we can shorten the possible combinations down to just 45! Use the tool below to get your 45 possible combos.

All you need is the first 'zone' past or starting on the zero. For example, in the image above that zone would start at 2, and end at 5.

While in most cases the second number on Dudley locks is smaller, there are a few where the second number is actually larger. This is what the 'Swap' and 'Show all' buttons are for. The 'Swap' button will switch back and forth between Large-Small combinations, and Small-Large combinations. The show all button will show all 100 possible combinations.

Remember that these are 2 number combinations. For the third number, just spin the dial around, trying the shackle in each of the 10 zones.

If it's a simply four-digit cable lock, you can easily figure out the combination with a quick peck-and-go method. Step 1: Find The Torque Screws

There is often a “registry” plate that will accompany these safes on the front. There will be two to four hex screws here. The first thing we will need to do is remove one side of them with a basic torx screw driver. This will uncover two holes, one on the side and one in the middle. The middle hole is what we will exploit to crack the safe open. Sometimes it won’t be there so you may have to drill a small hole directly in between the two screw holes. It won’t take long so don’t worry, a little elbow grease is all you need.

Step 2: Find The Hidden Key Hole

The hidden key hole is that hole right in the middle that we just found. Now what we need to do is get some traditional lock picking tools or fashion them out of paper clips and such which you can find out how to do in some of our other tutorials. The quick start guide below will show you the basics to get started. This will take a good amount of practice to become proficient, but keep working on it and you will be darn near an expert in almost no time.

Step 3: Pick That Lock

The hidden key hole may not look like one, but trust me it is. Again, if you don’t see the middle hole like the one in the image here, then that means you will have to drill a little bit. You can do this by hand, it’s not too hard to do and definitely don’t bring a loud electric drill. This part takes a good amount of finesse of course, so start picking! With a little bit of time this will pop the door open on the safe. Once you get the lock picked, you will see the keypad light up indicating that it is opened. Essentially, you have tricked the safe into thinking that you have inputted the correct key code.

Step 4: Put Everything Back Together

The beauty of this technique is that it is very easy to cover your tracks. Once you grab your items out of the safe, you can put it back together like nothing happened. This is good because you don’t want your hotel to charge you any fees for breaking their safe. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t do this for nefarious purposes because the freedom you have is the most expensive thing in life you will ever own.
